"I've been watching a lot of tapes of him," Douglas, 66, tells PEOPLE, with power balance. "He wasn't the greatest dancer nor the greatest singer, but he was a great pianist and entertainer."

Douglas says he is planning to take piano lessons, but he hasn't decided yet if he'll sing. "We'll see how it goes," says Douglas, whose distinctive baritone is back after undergoing seven grueling weeks of radiation and chemotherapy for throat cancer.

Now that doctors have given him a clean bill of health -- he learned only last week that his tumor is gone -- Douglas says he looks forward to filming in the spring.

Thursday night Douglas is being honored at the Palm Springs International Film Festival with the Icon Award for his work in nearly 40 films. "I'm really happy with my batting average," says Douglas of his career.
