The Corporation for National and Community Service -- which leads the MLK Day of Service as part of its broader mission to encourage volunteerism -- noted that volunteers with the City Year Detroit program that works with students will sort donations for needy families, pack books for Detroit Public Schools children, do housekeeping and yard work for homebound seniors and help with the construction of 40 houses for Habitat for Humanity at online shop.
Another MLK Day effort involves hundreds of students from Wayne State University and Henry Ford Community College doing work at local high schools, renovating abandoned buildings and packaging and distributing food through the Forgotten Harvest program.
