Some power balance bracelets improve your balance

Many athletes will try anything to get an edge, and the latest is a power balance bracelet.

Many pro athletes claim it gives them better balance...But do they really work?

If you've watched a sporting event in the last few months you've probably seen somebody wearing a Power Balance bracelet.

Some athletes say they won't play without them, but do they really help?

Power Balance says it will sell more than $35 million worth of bracelets this year.

The company originally marketed the bracelets to improve your balance, strength, and focus, but after some international scorn, the company backed off those claims.

Now the company says the bracelet is "Designed to resonate with and respond to the natural energy field of the body."

But health experts say if you are looking for a way to center your chi, look elsewhere...

"I know of no physiological reason why a bracelet around your wrist will improve, or change your ability to balance yourself," said Tim Saulsbury Physical Therapy Specialists.

But some folks in Sioux City felt it did help...

"It really helps with my balance," said one gym goer.

"That does help yea," said another.

The bracelet has a hologram made from a special material called mylar, but experts maintain no accessory on your arm will improve balance...

"Mylar is a polyethylene product that they use in like weather balloons and things like that. It's pretty fancy high–tech stuff, but that doesn't change that it's just a bracelet around your wrist," said Saulsbury.

The power balance bracelet wholesale costs $30, and pro athletes such as Kobe Bryant, Drew Brees, and LeBron James wear them.

Buying the bracelets for fashion reasons is one thing, but health experts insist they will not do anything to improve your balance.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers these vaccine facts

Flu may be making headlines in the United Kingdom, but folks in the U.S. -- almost hysterical at the specter of influenza a couple of seasons ago -- seem more concerned about anything and everything else. That's not the same thing, however, as saying there's no flu activity in this country.Online shop - 2011 new shoes, watches, sunglasses, handbags online.

The kameleon jewelry sale and movado bold blue are very hot now.

The UK's Health Protection Agency announced earlier this week that flu cases are on the upswing across that portion of Europe. And of course, as has been the case with the predominant H1N1 strain (formerly known as "swine flu" -- it seems so long ago now doesn't it?), those under age 65 are being stricken more severely.

Meanwhile, cases are increasing in the U.S. too, with the Southeast and portions of the Northeast appearing harder hit than most regions. Here's a portrait of flu in the U.S., with most states showing sporadic activity.

We're not suggesting that anyone panic. We've had enough of that, and even the CDC acknowledges that rates of seasonal influenza are fairly low. They love sunglasses 2011, especially Chanel sunglasses 2011.

But the season is far from over, and it's safe to say that vaccination rates are not at 100%.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers these vaccine facts -- the upshot of which is, unsurprisingly: Get the shot. Or the spray. Just get something. You only need one shot -- not two -- this year, after all.

With the nation's workers and students about to once again rub elbows with germ-carrying colleagues after a few weeks of eating sugar cookies by the fire, it pays to keep an eye on what those busy flu viruses are doing.Barbour jackets sale! Even merchants of morbidity are entitled to the full protection of the law

A federal judge on Wednesday struck down a New York City law that would have forced all bodegas and convenience stores to post gruesome images of diseased lungs, brains and teeth in the shops to discourage people from buying cigarettes.Power blance from online shop is good for health, powerbalance is very popular now.

In a 13-page ruling, Judge Jed S. Rakoff of United States District Court in Manhattan wrote that while the law was well intentioned, it violated federal law since only the federal government had the authority to regulate cigarette warnings and advertisements.

“Even merchants of morbidity are entitled to the full protection of the law,” Judge Rakoff wrote, “for our sake as well as theirs.”He is wearing power balance armband and power balance bracelet.

The decision puts an end — at least for now— to the city’s plan to have the placards displayed beside cash registers in more than 11,000 establishments across the city. While awaiting Judge Rakoff’s ruling, the city had agreed that it would postpone enforcement of its rule until this weekend.

Lawyers with the city’s Law Department said they planned to appeal the decision.

The city’s health department created the rule in late 2009. In June, the nation’s three biggest tobacco companies — Philip Morris, Lorillard and R. J. Reynolds — joined forces with the New York State Association of Convenience Stores in filing a lawsuit challenging the rule. In their suit, the tobacco companies and convenience stores said the rule violated the First Amendment rights of retailers who disagreed with the message, and breached a law stating that only the federal government can regulate cigarette warnings and advertising.Welcome for power balance bracelet wholesale.Welcome for power balance bracelet wholesale.

It wasn't too long ago that the Blake Griffin show was all for naught

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Lakers will continue to get top billing in Los Angeles over the Clippers (and second and maybe third), even with their Christmas Day humbling by the Heat.Online shop - 2011 new shoes, watches, sunglasses, handbags online

But kudos to the other team in La-La land for giving its most-loyal fan base quite the holiday treat in recent weeks, winning five of six games in a stretch that began on Dec. 17 and continued with a 100-99 win over the lowly Sacramento Kings on Monday night at Arco Arena.

It wasn't too long ago that the Blake Griffin show was all for naught, with the rookie forward wowing the league at large with his incredible feats of athleticism, but the Clippers losing 13 of their first 14 games. At home or on the road, Griffin, who was playing with a starting group that included three rookies and two second-year players, was a portrait of frustration after games at his locker. With his head hanging low, he would answer questions in robotic form, doing his media duty without complaint while clearly fuming on the inside.
Yet this mini-stretch has changed the mood for him and his team. And lest anyone discount it as irrelevant, consider the following: the 29-win Clippers team of 2009-10 won five of six games just once all season, never won more than four games in a row (once) while winning at least three straight just three times. This version, with Griffin receiving plenty of help from Most Improved Player candidate and the team's leading scorer, Eric Gordon, is now 9-9 since starting the season 1-13.They love Chanel sunglasses 2011 and barbour sale from online shop.

"(The losing) was getting to me," said Griffin, who broke his left kneecap just before the start of his original rookie season and required surgery that delayed this fantastic debut. "It's never fun to lose, but I really felt like a lot of it was on my shoulders. With all the injuries we had (namely to Baron Davis and Chris Kaman), myself, Eric (Bledsoe) and DeAndre (Jordan) were kind of like the older guys, especially with the starting group. But at the same time, we were getting better."

Beating the Kings the way they did sparked a Clippers chorus of 'a win is a win' sentiments, but coach Vinny Del Negro was right when saying that "any win in general is good for us." Even if they tried to give it away.

Ryan Gomes inexcusably fouled Tyreke Evans on a 3-point attempt with 1.9 seconds left, then his teammates allowed the Kings to corral the rebound when the guard missed his final free-throw attempt. A DeMarcus Cousins tip-in was off-target, and Evans missed a put-back from the lane that would have won it.Welcome for pillow pets wholesale.

Micah Hyde picked off Blaine Gabbert near the sideline

Iowa had waited for a big defensive play all season during heartbreaking last-second losses. It finally got it in the Insight Bowl.Power blance from online shop is good for health and very popular now.

Micah Hyde picked off Blaine Gabbert near the sideline, reversed field and followed a convoy 72 yards for the game-winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter, as Iowa rallied past 14th-ranked Missouri, 27-24.

Iowa (8-5) had been tortured all season by a defense that faded in crunch time. The Hawkeyes lost three straight coming into the bowl game, all by four points or less. The defense had given up a game-winning touchdown in each of its five losses, and also had the bowl distraction of player suspensions, as leading receiver Derrel Johnson-Koulianos and leading rusher Adam Robinson both sat out.

Big players stepped up in their place. True freshman Marcus Coker ran for an Iowa bowl record 219 yards and two touchdowns and Marvin McNutt compiled 63 yards receiving for the Hawkeyes.

Gabbert threw for 434 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions with 152 of those yards going on 15 completions to T.J. Moe. Jerrel Jackson caught nine passes for 129 yards for Missouri (10-3), which failed in its quest to win four straight games to end a season for the first time since 1965.

Iowa took the opening kickoff 67 yards in eight plays to paydirt. Ricky Stanzi's 49-yard connection with McNutt was the drive's big play, and Coker's fifth straight rush ended with a touchdown from one yard out.

The Tigers took their initial possession 75 yards on 16 plays, converting three third downs, including a 24-yard toss from Gabbert to Jackson on 3rd- and-19 from midfield. The march stalled and Grant Ressel booted through a 23-yard field goal for a four-point game.

A quick dart from its new back gave Iowa a double-digit edge. After a six-yard pass to Allen Reisner, Stanzi turned and handed off to Coker, who did the rest with a 62-yard jaunt for a 14-3 edge.He is wearing power balance armband.

Missouri reversed field position on its next series, but Iowa used a 38-yard toss from Stanzi to Don Nordmann to set up another score, this time a 34-yard field goal off the foot of Michael Meyer for a 17-3 lead.

The Tigers answered with a heavy dose of the pass -- five complete passes in all -- before Henry Josey caught the Hawkeyes off guard with a 10-yard TD jaunt for a seven-point margin.

Coker again ran around and through the Missouri defenders on Iowa's first second-half possession. Coker broke off a 35-yard run highlighted by a head-on collision with a linebacker five yards into the scamper. The drive stalled inside the Tigers five-yard line, and Meyer was true from 21 yards out for a 20-10 lead.

Missouri again called a plethora of passes on its next drive. Gabbert found an open Michael Egnew for 25 yards and again for 13 later on in the march. He finally sprinted up the middle for a seven-yard score and 20-17 deficit late in the third quarter.

After a Stanzi interception, Missouri methodically moved 57 yards in nine plays to take the lead. The Tigers needed to convert just one third down, and Egnew was the recipient of Gabbert's deft three-yard TD pass for a 24-20 lead.

After Gabbert's poor decision resulted in Hyde's 72-yard interception return, the Tigers advanced the football to the Iowa 43-yard line and appeared to connect on a fourth-down throw to the sideline. However, the originally ruled completion was overturned, creating a turnover on downs.

Iowa iced the game with Stanza's 39-yard completion to Reisner in the closing seconds.Welcome for power balance wholesale usa.

Senators forward Jason Spezza (shoulder) is out indefinitely

After stymieing the Kings through 40 minutes, making 30 saves, Sharks goaltender Antti Niemi allowed four goals on seven shots in the third as San Jose lost for the first time in five games, 4-0.Online shop - 2011 new shoes, watches, sunglasses, handbags online

Los Angeles has won nine of its past 12 games, and during that span, it has outscored its opponents 16-4 in the third period.

"If you just keep going with it, you are hoping something breaks or gives - and then it does, and you go from there," Kings coach Terry Murray said. "It was that stay-with-it attitude all the way through the sixty minutes."

Jonathan Quick made 24 saves, 10 in the third, for the shutout.

Trevor Lewis, former Shark Marco Sturm and Dustin Brown scored in a five-minute span early in the third period to break open the game, and Brown added a late breakaway goal. Anze Kopitar had three assists.

Sturm, who played for San Jose from 1997 through 2005 before being traded to Boston, got his first goal since the Bruins traded him to the Kings on Dec. 11.

The Sharks were sluggish in their first game following a three-day break, taking more than 12 minutes to put a shot on net and getting few good chances. Los Angeles held a 15-1 edge in shots at one point in the first period, but it was unable to get the puck past Niemi, making his second straight start after sitting three games.

"Without him, it could have been 4-0 in the first," Sharks coach Todd McLellan said. "That was just outworked, outhustled, outmuscled, and outcommitted, and it was pretty evident in the first period."

Play was more even in the second, but neither team was able to solve the opposing goalie, each of whom stopped quality scoring opportunities.Chanel sunglasses 2011 and barbour sale from online shop are very popular now.

"I'm just embarrassed," San Jose defenseman Dan Boyle said. "It was a terrible effort. There were a lot of line changes and faceoffs where things could happen. ... A lot of us took the night off, and against a team as good as that, it can't happen."

Other games:

Detroit's Chris Osgood stopped a season-high 46 shots in a 4-3 overtime win in Colorado, becoming the 10th goalie in league history to reach 400 wins. ... Rick Nash had two assists in a 4-3 shootout win over visiting Minnesota to become Columbus' all-time assists leader with 206, passing David Vyborny (204). ... Calgary's Miikka Kiprusoff made 25 saves to beat visiting Buffalo 5-2. ... David Krejci scored both of Boston's regulation goals in a 3-2 shootout win over host Florida. ... The Rangers' Matt Gilroy had two goals in a 7-2 win over the visiting Islanders.

Briefly:

Senators forward Jason Spezza (shoulder) is out indefinitely. ... Red Wings forward Danny Cleary (ankle) will miss at least a month.Welcome for pillow pets wholesale.

Obama is not the first president to be curious about what Americans are thinking and talking about

HONOLULU - President Obama doesn't seem to shy away from the divisive social and cultural topics that Americans are debating in their living rooms, gyms and workplaces.Power blance from online shop is good for health and very popular now.

He has spoken out about the responsibility of fathers to raise their children, has condemned the arrest of a prominent black Harvard professor who said he was the victim of racial profiling, was heard chastising Kanye West for the rapper's rude behavior at the MTV Video Music Awards and recently said his views on gay marriage were "evolving" from his previous opposition.

On Monday, the buzz was about how the president had weighed in on the redemption of Michael Vick. Obama phoned the owner of the Philadelphia Eagles to praise the team for giving a second chance to the quarterback, who is again a National Football League star 19 months after leaving prison for his role in a horrific dogfighting ring that killed pit bulls by electrocution, hanging and drowning.

The president has not spoken publicly about the call, though aides acknowledged that it took place. But Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie told Peter King of Sports Illustrated and NBC Sports that during their conversation Obama was passionate about Vick's comeback.

"He said, 'So many people who serve time never get a fair second chance,' " said Lurie, who did not indicate when the call occurred. "He said, 'It's never a level playing field for prisoners when they get out of jail.' And he was happy that we did something on such a national stage that showed our faith in giving someone a second chance after such a major downfall.''

Bill Burton, a White House spokesman, said Obama "of course condemns the crimes that Michael Vick was convicted of, but, as he's said previously, he does think that individuals who have paid for their crimes should have an opportunity to contribute to society again."

Burton added that Obama called Lurie in part to discuss plans for the use of alternative energy at Lincoln Financial Field, where the Eagles play.

Vick, whom endorsers shunned after the dogfighting controversy, is now the pitchman for a Nissan dealer in Woodbury, N.J., outside Philadelphia. But the general manager of the dealership acknowledged in an interview with the Philadelphia Inquirer that he had taken some criticism for embracing the quarterback.

Fans in Philadelphia and elsewhere have generally stopped bringing anti-Vick signs to games as they did last year, but Vick's emergence as one of the league's top players - and a most-valuable-player candidate - has revived debate about whether he should be so enthusiastically embraced less than two years after he left prison. He is wearing power balance armband.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said Obama's call was appropriate, noting that Vick himself has given speeches across the country apologizing for his crimes.

"Obama's a sports guy, Vick's a sports guy, and comebacks and redemption can happen," said Ingrid E. Newkirk, the group's co-founder and president. "We all want a president who can lift us up and move us forwards when ugly things happen, but that cannot let us forget and remain watchful to avoid future abuses."

At the same time, Newkirk said, the embrace of Vick by the president carries risks, as many people remain revolted by his crimes. Vick pleaded guilty in 2007 to the dogfighting charges and served a 19-month sentence that ended in May 2009. According to court documents, he financed a series of pit-bull fights in which bets were placed. At least six dogs that did not perform well were drowned or hanged.

Soon after his sentence ended, the Eagles signed him.

Newkirk strongly criticized the quarterback's recent remark that he would eventually like to have a pet in his home.

"You don't forget," she said. "In the same way, you would hope a pedophile would get a chance at what he does [in his career], but you wouldn't want him to get another child in his home," she said.

Obama is not the first president to be curious about what Americans are thinking and talking about. President Bill Clinton also urged American fathers to do better, while President George W. Bush condemned the widespread use of steroids in baseball.

Obama's supporters welcome his interest in matters beyond the customary arenas of policy and politics.

"He's not only leader of the government but also a role model and a moral voice for the country," said Neera Tanden, a former Obama adviser who is now chief operating officer for the Center for American Progress, a liberal Washington think tank. "And that is why he's discussed the role of parents as their children's first teachers, chastised absent fathers, as well as commented on issues that raise ethical concerns in the culture, outside of politics."Welcome for power balance wholesale usa.

Marie was found dead at her Pasadena home Sunday

Power balance from Online shop is very popular now, it is said that power balance is good for health.

Marie, a protege of funk singer Rick James, was one of the few white musicians to score hits on the R&B charts, with 'I Need Your Lovin' and 'Lovergirl' in the '80s.Teena Marie, the singer-songwriter known for such funk-infused 1980s hits as "I Need Your Lovin'" and "Lovergirl," and one of the few white musicians to achieve renown on the R&B charts, has died. She was 54.

Marie was found dead at her Pasadena home Sunday, Pasadena Police Lt. Diego Torres said. Police and paramedics were called to her home about 3 p.m. after her daughter found her unconscious, Torres said.

Reviewing her performance in 1981 at the Long Beach Arena, Dennis Hunt wrote in The Times: "A tiny young woman with a powerful voice, Marie is a terrific singer and, quite frankly, better than nearly all her black competitors."

Born Mary Christine Brockert on March 5, 1956, in Santa Monica, Marie was raised in a predominantly black area of Venice and began singing professionally at age 8. Soon after graduating from Venice High School she signed with Motown Records, where she met funk music pioneer Rick James, who would become her mentor, musical collaborator and lover, a relationship she described as "fiery."

He produced her 1979 debut album, "Wild and Peaceful," which went gold and featured her first hit single, a duet with James called "I'm a Sucker for Your Love."

She recounted later that Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr., unsure how black audiences might react to her image, decided the album cover should feature a seascape with clouds rather than her photograph.

"He just wanted people to hear the music first, and then it wouldn't matter to people what color I was," she told the Boston Globe in 2004.

Many R&B enthusiasts who loved her strong, bluesy vocals didn't realize she was white until her photograph was featured on her second album, "Lady T" in 1980. By then she already had a large following in the black community. She is wearing sunglasses 2011 , it is chanel sunglasses 2011 .

In an effort to reach a broader pop audience, she signed on as the opening act on the Shaun Cassidy tour in 1979, which made for an unlikely match-up. Cassidy's fans were mostly young white girls.

"It was a rough situation for me given the way I sing and with my band being black," Marie told The Times in 1980. "Those young girls didn't know my music, and they couldn't really relate to me or the band."

Marie quarreled with Motown over royalties and fought to be released from her contract. The legal battle, which was settled in the early 1980s, resulted in the Brockert Initiative, named for her, which curbs a record company's power to keep musicians under contract while refusing to release their music.

"It wasn't something I set out to do," she told The Times in 2004. "I just wanted to get away from Motown and have a good life. But it helped a lot of people, like Luther Vandross and the Mary Jane Girls and a lot of different artists, to be able to get out of their contracts."

Marie, sometimes called the "Ivory Queen of Soul," went on to produce her own albums. She largely vanished from the public eye in the early 1990s after the birth of her daughter, Alia, saying she wanted to devote herself to motherhood. In 2004 she put out her first new album in a decade, "La Dona," featuring the track "Still in Love," which earned her a Grammy nomination.

That year, she was devastated by the death of James, with whom she had been touring, and stopped working for a time. She began touring again in recent years after battling a prescription-drug addiction.

A complete list of survivors was not available.

Cities from Philadelphia to Boston

Power balance from online shop is very popular now, it is said that power balance is good for health.
Retailers expecting to ring up sales on the day after Christmas may have to intensify discounts over the next two weeks after an East Coast snowstorm disrupted one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

Cities from Philadelphia to Boston may get the most snow of the season today, forcing consumers who had planned to shop to focus instead on getting home before returning to work tomorrow. Some stores in the southeastern U.S. weren’t able to open as early as planned today for doorbuster specials and may close early as snow made driving dangerous.

Spending may shift into January, denting growth after the International Council of Shopping Centers predicted that retail sales will rise 3.5 percent to 4 percent in 2010, the biggest increase in four years. The day after Christmas is one of the five busiest shopping days of the year, according to Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst at NPD Group Inc., a research firm based in Port Washington, New York.

“It’s like throwing a party and nobody comes because the focus has gone from post-holiday shopping to post-holiday travel,” Cohen said in a telephone interview today. “Look for sales to be repeated by retailers. They’re going to be more aggressive. They’ve got to throw another party.”

It may take retailers two weeks to capture sales that would have occurred today, Cohen said. Shoppers will lose enthusiasm as the holiday season excitement wanes, he said.

The parking lot of a Sears Holdings Corp. store in Greensboro, North Carolina, signaled the slippery, slushy days ahead in the Northeast. Two cars were in the lot at 9:30 a.m. even though Sears, based in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, advertised early-bird discounts of up to 60 percent on clothing and 30 percent on refrigerators and washing machines.

‘Wife Wasn’t Happy’

“My wife wasn’t happy when I decided to come out,” said Michael Scarlett, shopping at Sears after three inches of snow had accumulated overnight. He planned to pick up an Android tablet computer he’d ordered online and return home.

At 10:30 a.m., the Apple Inc. store in Greensboro had 17 customers and 17 red-shirted employees, including four at the front window watching a yellow bulldozer push snow into a pile in the parking lot. At a Macy’s Inc. location, the cosmetics counters had no customers shortly before 11 a.m.

Up the East Coast, in Whitehall, Pennsylvania, shopper Camille Qualtere was surprised to find the Lehigh Valley Mall “deserted.”

“We thought, ‘Is the mall closed?’” said Qualtere, 54, who took her two daughters to return unwanted gifts and shop for discounted clothes at Cincinnati-based Macy’s before the storm started. “I didn’t hear about the snow because I was cooking all day yesterday. My daughter just told me about it.”

New Snow Boots

Shopping at the same mall, Kris Kotsch bought a pair of snow boots to prepare for the storm. With no snow falling yet, the 42-year-old photography teacher went back inside armed with the gift cards she received for Christmas to look for a new mobile phone.

“I came for the boots,” Kotsch said. “Now I’m going to look for more.”

Consumers may temper their spending if the snowfall stalls shopping for several days and the frugality of New Year’s resolutions kick in, said Michael Dart, the San Francisco-based head of private equity at the New York consulting firm Kurt Salmon Associates.

“You’re moving into an environment where the consumer is going to be pulling back,” Dart said. “Retailers don’t want to lose too many of those shopping days. If it’s just today, it’s not a big deal. But the longer the weather remains bad, it becomes problematic for retailers.”

Wind Gusts

The snow is expected to persist into tomorrow as the storm moves along the coast, with wind gusts of as much as 50 miles per hour (80 kilometers per hour), AccuWeather said. The National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning through 6 p.m. tomorrow. Boston could see 12 to 16 inches of snowfall along with wind gusts of as much as 60 mph, starting tonight.

Temperatures for New York, Philadelphia and Washington are expected to dip into the 20-degree range tonight.

In Manhattan shortly before noon, 13 people waited in the checkout line at a Gap Inc. store, where cotton thermal long sleeved T-shirts were marked down to $10 from $22.50. Some items were selling at 80% off until noon and then half off for the rest of the day.

“I’m not concerned about the snow slowing us down,” said Janet Guillen, manager of the Gap store, which is near a subway stop. “People are still shopping,” she said, as the snowfall entered its second hour.

The power of a placebo drug

Could you be healed by the power of a placebo drug—even when you know it's a fake?
It might sound strange to some, but a new study published in the most recent issue of PLoS One may have turned the conventional idea of a placebo on its head. Researchers found that placebo pills benefited patients, even when doctors explained that they were only taking sugar pills.

"Until now, doctors have thought they had to lie about the placebo pill in order to tap into the effects," said Dr. Ted Kaptchuk wearing power balance of Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconness Medical Center in Boston. "But we said, 'Let's see if placebos can work when they're applied in an honest way.'"

And, according to this study, it seems they did.

Researchers divided 80 study participants who suffered from irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, into two groups. One group received no treatment for their condition while the other received sugar pills that they took twice a day.

Three weeks later, 59 percent of study participants who knowingly took the placebos reported reduced symptoms and adequate relief for their IBS symptoms, while only 35 percent of the control group reported similar results.

The placebo effect has long been based on positive thinking, with people taking fake pills that they believe to be real. Welcome for power balance wholesale at online shop for health.

"I was hopeful from the beginning," said Kaptchuk. "I thought [the study] would work and it would be very subversive."

Half of American Doctors Gave Placebos to Patients
The motivation for the study came on the heels of a 2008 survey published in the journal BMJ which found that half of American doctors had given their patients placebos in place of actual medication.

When asked whether they had used placebos for psychological benefits in the patients, most doctors responded yes in the 2008 survey.

This practice goes against advice from the American Medical Association, which discourages placebos in a clinical setting, unless the patient is aware and agrees to it.

But physicians said this should not take away from the importance of placebos, as they can benefit a patient's well-being and help test new medicines in randomized trials.

Drunken driver sentenced to 51 years

(CNN) -- A convicted drunken driver was sentenced Wednesday to 51 years to life in prison for a crash that killed Los Angeles Angel pitcher Nick Adenhart and two others, the Orange County, California, district attorney said.
Andrew Thomas Gallo, 23, of San Gabriel, California, selling ugg boots, received the maximum sentence after a jury found him guilty in September of three felony counts of murder, felony drunken driving and two other felonies, according to District Attorney Tony Rackauckas and court spokeswoman Carole Levitzky.
Gallo had previously been convicted in San Bernardino County, California, for driving under the influence in 2006 and was on probation at the time of the April 2009 crash, the district attorney said.
Authorities say Gallo's blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit when he sped through a red light and crashed into a car.
Adenhart, 22, of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, who was beginning his first full season in the majors, was killed. He had pitched just his fourth Major League game hours earlier.
The crash also killed Courtney Stewart, 20, a student and former cheerleader at California State University at Fullerton, and law student Henry Pearson, 25, who was working toward becoming a sports agent, authorities said.
A fourth victim, 24-year-old Jon Wilhite, a former baseball player for the Cal State-Fullerton Titans, was critically injured and is now in stable condition, the prosecutor said.
"Before drinking, set up a plan to have a sober driver," Rackauckas said in a written statement. "If you make the decision to drink and drive, we will make the decision to charge you with vehicular manslaughter or murder and you may spend the rest of your life in prison. During this holiday season, think about the pain on the victims' families' faces before you drink and drive."
In addition to being drunk and on probation, Gallo was driving on a suspended driver's license when his minivan, going about 65 mph in a 35 mph zone, crashed into Adenhart's vehicle at 12:23 a.m. on April 9, 2009, authorities said. His license had been suspended because of a prior drunken driving conviction, the prosecutor said. Gallo's 21-year-old step-brother was a passenger in the minivan.
After the collision, Gallo fled on foot, but was arrested less than 30 minutes later about two miles away by Anaheim police officers, authorities said. Two hours after the crash, Gallo had a blood alcohol level of 0.19%, well above the legal limit of 0.08%, authorities said.
Rackauckas released remarks made during Wednesday's sentencing by relatives of the crash victims.
In a written statement submitted to the court, Adenhart's family said: "Our pain is not a state of being but a condition of life. We live with this hole in our family, our heart, our belief and our lives. No amount of words will ever fill that hole or in any way replace the loss of our dear Nick. Nick was beautiful. That phrase describes him best."
Jon Wilhite's mother, Elizabeth, said her son has had "to learn to walk, talk, swallow, and eat."
"All the things we take for granted, Jon had to learn. His life before the crash was very active. He will never be able to turn his head to look up at the moon or to play baseball, which he loves so much. But he takes it in stride. Jon is the strongest person I know. He's our hero and didn't deserve what happened to him," the mother said.
Jon Wilhite wrote a statement that was read to the court, explaining how his life is forever changed. He said he believes Gallo should be severely punished for taking the lives of three peoples whom he thinks about every day.

2010 NFL MVPs after week 15

Just when you thought it was safe to name Tom Brady(notes) the league's most valuable player… As amazing as power balance.

The 2010 NFL MVP race has unofficially been a two-man race for the past couple of weeks. Week 15 eliminated all other candidates but those two individuals. Jacksonville running backMaurice Jones-Drew(notes) was held to under 50 yards on the ground in a possible division-deciding game at Indianapolis. Pittsburgh safety Troy Polamalu(notes) missed week 15 and will sit out at least this week's contest, as well, which will prevent him from catching up to the two remaining MVP candidates. Neither Peyton Manning(notes) nor Philip Rivers(notes) can compare with the two QBs listed below.Unless a robbery occurs, one of these two individuals is going to be named the 2010 NFL MVP. This Giants fan knows which player he'd vote for, even though the thought absolutely sickens me after last Sunday.

2010 NFL MVPs after week 16: QB Mike Vick

Last week, I wrote that Vick needed an amazing performance against theNew York Giants to catch up with Tom Brady. doing power balance wholesale, With the Giants leading thePhiladelphia Eagles 31-10 with just under eight minutes to play, Vick and his offense completed one of the most remarkable comebacks in recent NFL history. In a six-minute span, Vick rushed for 94 yards, threw two touchdown passes and ran in for a score. The DeSean Jackson(notes) punt return was merely the cherry on top of the rally sundae, a dessert that still makes me ill several days later.

Vick finished the day with 130 yards rushing, 242 passing yards and four total touchdowns (three passing, one rushing). He's currently third in the league in total QB rating (103.6) and he has thrown nine touchdowns and rushed for three TDs in Philadelphia's last four games. Vick's performance against my beloved Big Blue Wrecking Crew was the thing legends are made of, a six-minute span of heroics that I'll one day grow to truly appreciate; long after this season is over.

2010 NFL MVPs after week 16: QB Tom Brady

Sunday was Brady's worst performance since the week 9 loss to the Browns, and it wasn't all that bad at all. He completed 15 of 24 attempts for 163 yards and two touchdowns against the Packers in a winning effort. His 110.2 QB rating, one that any quarterback would take, was also his lowest in over a month. Brady had a few close calls but finished another game without tossing an interception, his ninth consecutive game without a pick.

Heading into the final two weeks of the 2010 NFL regular season, Brady leads the league in QB rating, TD passes (tied with Drew Brees(notes) at 31) and he's only thrown four interceptions in 449 total attempts.

Brady's complete 2010 MVP resume is more impressive than Vick, who's missed over 15 quarters this season due to injuries. Even still, Vick's historic performance at New Meadowlands Stadium on Sunday has to have even the biggest Tom Brady fan wondering if this year's MVP award isn't a lock just yet.

Luxury tax

According to the Associated Press, the Yankees selling ugg boots paid $18 million on the competitive balance tax (commonly known as the luxury tax) on their payroll in 2010.

The Red Sox were the only other team taxed and paid $1.5 million.

The threshold in 2010 was $170 million. The Sox went over the threshold for the first time since 2007.

The Red Sox had a season-ending payroll of $170,650,856 for 2010. But for CBT purposes, the average annual value of contracts are taken into account along with all players on the 40-man roster and medical benefits. That total was approximately $176 million as the Sox were taxed at a rate of 22.5 percent over the threshold selling ugg bailey button.

The threshold next season will be $178 million and under the current collective bargaining agreement, any excess would taxed at a rate of 30 percent.

Barring a deal to shed salary, the Red Sox almost certainly will go over that mark in 2011.

Of course, purchasing Liverpool means the Red Sox will have to trade all their players by May 1 anyway. Everybody knows that. It's a well-known financial principle that people can only own one business at a time or risk ruin.

What made him a star

MINNEAPOLIS -- Near the end of Brett Favre's postgame news conference on Monday night, maybe the final one of his illustrious 20-year career, the Vikings quarterback was asked, if this is the end, about life after football.

"Is there one?" Favre smart-alecked back, wearing power balance.

And the quarterback drew a laugh from the folks in attendance, before saying it's something that he's actually looking forward to. That, on a day when he went from "out" to "questionable" to "playing" to "starting" before a whistle was even blow, might have been the biggest mistruth of all.

Is Favre looking forward to the end of this particular season? No question. He spent the better part of the fall combating teams trying to emulate the Saints' NFC title game strategy -- like Gregg Williams' old mentor Buddy Ryan once said, "When you hit the quarterback, sometimes the whole team feels it" -- and took the kind of beating that Steven Seagal couldn't dream up. Intent to injure is harsh, but most defenses facing the Vikings made it a point to let the quarterback know they were there

Plus, he always liked heading back to the tractor in January.

July is when the story changes. See, Favre is a football player -- always has been -- and his ability to be anything else is certainly up for question. So when it comes time again to strap it on, it's hard to believe that Favre won't get that itch again.

It's why, now, much of the public has come to resent him. But it's also why, as those masses continue to grouse and moan about the way this guy is covered in the media, they continue to tune in at record numbers.

So if this is really it, his legacy will have been altered by these last three years away from Green Bay, for better and worse. And if the final 24 hours of his career really were those on Monday, they did a lot to capture the complexity of how we'll all try to figure how Favre will be remembered.

"For me, it has been 20 great years and I said this last week, if I didn't play tonight and the season ended, so be it," Favre said. "I'll say it again -- it has been a great run. I think my stubbornness, hard-headedness and stupidity at times has enabled me to play for 20 years and play the way I've played. It's just the way I have always approached it, the way I play. I wouldn't trade it for anything. It has been everything I thought it would be and then some. My last pass was just as much fun as my first one."

Perfect. Those words tell you everything you need to know about the last 28 months, from the time the Packers pulled off the stunning 2008 trade with the Jets to the moment Chicago rookie Corey Wootton (born shortly after Favre's high school graduation) buried him into the TCF Bank Stadium turf.

They show you, first, why so many have festered a disdain for the Bayou Bomber, putting on display his penchant for playing by his own rules with little regard for the environment around him.

He hemmed and hawed over the decision to come back through the summer of 2008, then turned the early days of Packers training camp into his own personal circus. Similar kvetching was staged the next two summers with the Vikings, and he arrived each time after a whole lot of butt-smooching and on a private jet, which flies right in the face of the image perpetuated in those Wrangler ads.

And that doesn't even touch on whether or not his personal pursuits got in the way of team success.

Favre's torn biceps in 2008 rendered him ineffective, and while it took guts to go out there and play, it also helped firebomb the Jets' 8-3 start that year. His swashbuckling side also reared its ugly head in last January's NFC title game, after he put together one of his best seasons, playing the position more like a point guard. And his constant feuding with Brad Childress hung over that team, and contributed to this year's club falling to pieces before the midseason dismissal of the coach.

The Jenn Sterger case became the final car crashing into the freeway pileup of a 2010 season and, again, threw another layer of vitriol out there for the general public.

That gives you plenty to hate. But you tuned in anyway, and the reason why is simple. No matter how you slice it, Favre is compelling, and there's plenty of good to go with the bad.

The best part: For all his warts, the reason Favre continued to haul his behind out there was really rooted in why anyone who started playing this game at a young age continues for as long as they can. Plain and simple, he loves the game, and that's a fact that's pretty hard to deny.

That's why, when he woke up Monday and felt alright, the call went in to coach Leslie Frazier. It was snowing, it was going to be nasty. But most of all, it was game day, and that's always meant one thing to Favre: It was time to play.

"I wanted to play," he said. "I wish I could have lasted, but I don't regret the decision."

So he played, and we got a time capsule of what these last years were like. Favre generated drama during the day. He excited the crowd when he got out there. He drew outsized television ratings. He came out on fire and led a scintillating touchdown drive to open the game. He threw a pick. He got hurt. He left the game, doing power balance wholesale.

But really, what he showed was that, while part of this might be a craving of the spotlight of an ex-Packers quarterback, who played so many years as king in a small market, he still loves to get out there and play.

Favre's consecutive starts streak was snapped at 297 games the week before. His Vikings were eliminated from postseason contention. And yet, he wanted to play at all costs, for better or worse, and Frazier's hope is that others got the implicit message sent.

"Not only on our team, but in baseball, basketball, football, any sport," Frazier said. "To accomplish what he's accomplished, there's no reason (he had to play). He could walk away with his legacy intact. He didn't have to play tonight. He didn't have to say, 'Coach, I want to play. I want to help this team win. I want our fans to be able to see me play in this last home game.'

"Nobody would have frowned; nobody would have second-guessed if he didn't play the rest of this season. It just would have been. A great example of what it means to do your best in every situation."

In the end, history shows us that these final years will be sidelights to what Favre did in Green Bay, like Joe Montana's time in Kansas City or Johnny Unitas and Joe Namath finishing up with the Chargers and Rams, respectively. Eventually, Packers fans will forgive him, and we'll be reminded of his astronomical numbers when Peyton Manningstarts breaking them a few years down the line.

But these three years to finish Favre's career (again, if this is the end) did serve a purpose. Everyone learned a little bit more about the man, both good and bad.

And for as much as he's pushed the "simple man" notion, he'll likely remain a pretty complicated guy to figure.
