2011 shopping, who will be Miss Penn Yan?


Miss Penn Yan 2011 will be chosen during an interview and screening process this week and the crowning will be held at 8 p.m. Friday night during the 26th Annual StarShine celebration in Penn Yan.
Miss Penn Yan and her court represent the community at a variety of events, parades and Chamber of Commerce functions throughout the year.

The Yates County Women (formerly Penn Yan BPW) sponsors the Miss Penn Yan program.
Young women from Penn Yan who are students at the Penn Yan Academy or Emmanuel Baptist Academy and in grades 9-11 are encouraged to apply.

Miss Penn Yan 2010 is Allie Perl who loves power balance. She is a student at Penn Yan Academy and was sponsored by the Penn Yan Rotary Club.

Here is some information on the candidates competing for this year’s Miss Penn Yan crown.
Each candidate was asked, “What would you do to improve the community if you were in charge of Penn Yan for one day?”

Alyssa Broome
Alyssa Broome is the daughter of Shawn and Kelly Broome from Penn Yan. She is sponsored by Penn Yan Volunteer Ambulance Corps Explorer Post #6144.
Alyssa is involved JV basketball, HUBBA, Class of 2013 treasurer, Explorers (treasurer), volunteering at the Penn Yan elementary pre-Krooms and elementary events, honor roll, academic excellence letter, babysitting, Town of Jerusalem swim instructor, Rotary exchange program.
Her hobbies are knitting, sewing, dance, basketball, spending time with family and friends, learning new interesting facts, drawing and photography.
“To improve Penn Yan I would have the community come together to fix up this beautiful town we live in. Everyone would find something to do like planting gardens around town, fixing up the local playground, houses and buildings to enhance what a great town we already live in.”

Rachel Gaston
Rachel Gaston is the daughter of Herbert and Anita Gaston from Bluff Point, and is sponsored by Milly’s Pantry.
Rachel is involved with volunteering at Milly’s Pantry, packing Food for the Needy, Varsity tennis, four years on Masterminds, drama club, PYTCo and PYTCo youth counselor, plays the flute, member of St Paul’s Lutheran Church and active in the youth group, serves as acolyte and has been on two mission trips to New Orleans and Maryland, academic excellence, honor roll, Girl Scouts. She is employed during the growing season to mow lawns.
She enjoys downhill skiing, rollerblading, making power point presentations, ping-pong, tennis, ice skating, reading, knitting, drawing and painting, traveling and camping with her family, gardening, photography, biking, hiking and doing family activities, such as making apple cider and splitting wood.
“I would shed light on hunger issues, if I was in charge of Penn Yan for a day. I would give a presentation to churches and civic organizations about hunger in my community. These groups could donate food to Milly’s Pantry, which is working to alleviate hunger locally.”

Carolyn Smith
Carolyn Smith is the daughter of Andrew and Tammy Smith from Penn Yan. She is sponsored by the Penn Yan Lions Club.
Carolyn is involved with cross country, lacrosse, ski club, HUBBA, Interact club, attends St. Michael’s Church, youth group, yearbook club, 4H, leadership conference at SUNY Brockport in ‘09 and ‘10, vice president of Girls Athletic Association, band, varsity scholar athlete, academic excellence ‘09 and ‘10, Adirondack, treasurer of 9th grade class, secretary of 10th grade class and vice president of current class, pep club, works at the Valley Inn, worked at the school over the summer of 2010, Young Entrepreneurs Academy.
Her hobbies are running, biking, mountain climbing (summer and winter), hiking, camping, making jewelry, spending time with family, reading, skiing, volunteering her time, lacrosse, watching movies, listening to music, shopping for pillow pets, getting together with friends.
“If I were in charge of Penn Yan, I would ask every student in grades nine through 12 to shadow a local entrepreneur. This would teach students the responsibility carried by a business owner. If every person in our community had the entrepreneurial spirit our community would be better off.”

Ashley Tillman
Ashley Tillman is a junior at Penn Yan Academy and is the daughter of David and Beth Tillman from Penn Yan. She is sponsored by Penn Yan Kiwanis Club.
Ashley is involved with PYA drama club, select choir, yearbook staff, HUBBA, pep club, international club, all state, all county, NYSSMA solo festival, attends Benton United Methodist Church, volunteers for church and Yates County Christmas for the Needs and was recognized by the Penn Yan Rotary Club as a Penn Yan Academy Outstanding youth in October 2008.
In her free time she enjoys reading, crafts, theatre and music. She is very family oriented and loves the support of her family. She also enjoys babysitting and working with kids.
“If I were in charge of Penn Yan for a day, I would find a way to get information out to the community about the issue of poverty in our town. Hopefully by informing our community of these problems, we will be able to end them, and start working on how to end them in our country, and then the whole world.”

Darcie Travis
Darcie Travis is the daughter of Kyle and Bridget Travis of Penn Yan, and is sponsored by Catholic Daughters of America (SDA) St. Michae’s Court 1173.
Darcie is involved in Penn Yan Academy art club, varsity bowling team, JV tennis, babysitting and is active in St. Michael’s Church.
Her hobbies listening to pop and country music, playing tennis, bowling, drawing, hanging out with friends, helping her mother with the dishes and cleaning the house.
“I would like to fix up the park near the Corner Café so local children can have a safe but fun place to play. This is an in town park. So people wouldn’t have to drive all the way to Red Jacket to have a fun, safe place to play.”
